Please welcome the newest Trillionaire, Marketing Designer Hayne Park. We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know another member of our creative team!
What led you to Trillion?
I have worked at other creative marketing agencies, and I love the energy of working alongside fellow creatives and getting to know a variety of clients. My previous agency was medium-sized; I liked the idea of working at either a much larger agency or something slightly smaller. Trillion was perfect.
When did you first develop an interest in illustrating/design?
Perhaps I was born to it. There is a Korean tradition: when a baby is 100 days old, they are placed before a table of different foods and objects – books, threads, note pads, brushes, ink, and money. Whatever they reach for is believed to be an indication of their future. I reached for a paintbrush!
From the age of about four years old, I cared only about drawing. I think I am lucky that from day one, I knew what I was going to do for a living.
When did you first realize you were a good illustrator/designer?
I don’t know if I’ll ever know if I am a good illustrator/designer! (Laughs) When I was at the Pratt Institute, I noticed that the doodles/sketches I created in between classes were way more interesting than what I was doing for my assignments. My peers and professors agreed; the work I created on my own was more lively and fun. When I started tapping into my stream-of-consciousness doodling, that’s when I really found my voice and learned to trust my creative instincts. And then was able to translate that into all my work.
How do you stay inspired?
I consume all sorts of artistic media: movies, comics, video games, dancing videos I find online, or stand-up comedy. Humor is a big inspiration for me; my personal sketching tends toward the sardonic. My favorite way to get inspired is animated music videos – the Korean artist Peejay’s Na B Ya is a current favorite. The video is done with vector illustrations. The motion graphics transitions between scenes are incredible, and the character designs are really good.
Very mundane things inspire me as well. Like waking up really late – but then realizing it’s a weekend. Or simply having a really good sandwich. Even a bad day can be an inspiration because I cope using humor and that leads to creativity.
What is your favorite social media channel?
I like Instagram because it’s all picture-based. I follow several art accounts, of course; Some of my favorites are @laurentamaki, @falseknees, and @jean_jullien.
How do you relax during time off?
I play video games, I sing and play guitar. I love just lying around with my cat, Teeny. I like to bake, and I can make a mean crème brûlée!
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I get to move shapes around! (Laughs) Seriously, I get to design all day.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Moving shapes around is harder than you think! At a certain point in every day, I run out of creative juice. When that happens, I find that simply taking a break and clearing my head helps. Every design assignment is a problem waiting to be solved, and sometimes, it takes a step back to have that ‘Eureka!’ moment. Working on something for too long can lead to hyperfixation on a minor element when the simple solution may lie in the bigger picture – I find this to be true for both Illustration and Design. All it takes is the mental breathing room for a new perspective to save the day.
